GamStop Stops at the Border. The Rest of the Internet Doesn't.
Self-exclusion is a promise you make to a machine, and the machine only keeps it inside the UK. Search for sites not on gamstop and you walk into a crowded market of casinos that never signed that promise – some properly licensed somewhere else, plenty of them simply unbothered. Telling those two apart is worth more than any welcome bonus.
What the register actually does
GamStop is a UK database. Sign up and it tells UK-licensed operators to block you. That’s the whole mechanism. It has no reach over Curaçao, Anjouan, or a server farm in a jurisdiction you’d have to look up. The block is real where it applies – and it applies only where the operator holds a UK licence. Not a loophole somebody forgot to close. The design.
The protections you leave behind
Offshore doesn’t automatically mean crooked. It does mean the net is thinner, and you should know exactly which strands are missing before you start.
| Protection | UK-licensed | Typical offshore |
|---|---|---|
| Self-exclusion via GamStop | Mandatory | Not offered |
| Dispute resolution | Free, via ADR | Varies; often none |
| Player funds | Often segregated | Rarely guaranteed |
| Deposit limits | Required tools | Whatever the site fancies |
None of that is theoretical. A dispute with a UK operator has a defined route and a body that will hear it. A dispute with a small offshore licensee tends to end wherever their terms say it ends.
Vetting a site in five minutes
Most of the work happens before money moves. Do it in this order:
- Find the licence number in the footer and check it against the regulator’s own public register – not the site’s “about” page.
- Read the withdrawal section of the terms. Look for caps, “pending” periods, and any clause letting the house void a win.
- Search the casino’s name alongside the word “withdrawal” and read the complaints, not the reviews.
- Test support with a real question before you’re owed anything. Speed of answer tells you plenty.
- Deposit the smallest amount the site allows, then withdraw it straight away. That’s the whole test.
Red flags worth walking away from
- Bonus terms capping your maximum win at a fraction of what you put in.
- No named regulator, or a licence number that doesn’t resolve.
- Withdrawal limits buried three pages into the terms.
- Support that exists only as a chat window with no transcript.
What to do with all this
If you’re here because you excluded yourself and want back in, be honest about that first. The offshore market is very good at making that decision easy and very bad at helping you live with it. If you’re simply shopping outside a system you never joined, then treat the licence check as the price of entry – every time, on every new site, before a penny moves. A casino that can’t show you a verifiable licence in thirty seconds is telling you something. Believe it and close the tab.
